Major Crime and Shootings Plummet in NYC, NYPD Reports

Overall, major crimes were down 6% compared to June of last year. The city recorded 31 murders last month, a 13.9% decrease from 36 in June 2024. Robberies fell 6%, felony assaults dropped 8.1%, burglaries were down 10.6%, grand larcenies declined 4.8%, and car thefts slipped 1.3%. Reported rapes were also down 7.3%, from 179 to 163 cases.

Shooting incidents showed the steepest decline, plunging almost 30% from 107 last June to 75 this year.

Looking at the first half of 2025, major crimes overall fell 6% citywide. Murders were down by nearly a quarter, robberies dropped 13%, grand larcenies 7%, auto thefts 4.5%, and felony assaults 1%.

From January through June, New York City recorded 337 shootings—a 23% decline year over year—and 397 shooting victims, down 24%.

“In the first six months of the year, New York City saw the lowest number of shooting victims and shooting incidents in recorded history,” said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “Records like this don’t happen by chance—they happen because of strategy, precision, and the relentless work of your NYPD officers.”

Subway crime also continued its downward trend, falling 6.4% last month, with 175 reported incidents compared to 187 in June 2024. Hate crimes declined 22% in June.

Despite these improvements, rape reports rose 20.5% in the first six months of the year, even as the monthly totals in June decreased. The NYPD said the increase is partly due to changes in state law last September that expanded the legal definition of rape to cover additional forms of sexual assault. Most reported cases involved people known to each other.

“The NYPD continues to encourage survivors to come forward and report these crimes,” the department said in its statement.
