Lag BaOmer Celebrated by the Jewish Community in Kyiv

In the Jewish town of Anatevka, the Jewish community of Kyiv and the surrounding region gathered to celebrate Lag BaOmer. “It is a special day in the midst of a long period of mourning,” shared shliach Rabbi Moshe Asman • Full Story, Photos

“This is truly a celebration through tears,” Rabbi Asman said. “During this time, Jews refrain from rejoicing as we remember the students of the great sage and tzaddik Rabbi Akiva. But right in the middle of these days, there is one bright day when we can—and must—rejoice. It carries a profound message: even in times of deep pain, Hashem gives us the ability not to drown in sorrow and mourning, but to begin again.”

“For Ukraine, this is especially symbolic,” he continued. “The heroic people of Ukraine are living through a period of pain, loss, and constant challenges. Tragically, there are victims of Russian aggression every day. But precisely because of this, it is so important not to give up on prayer, light, and joy—joy that is born not from easy circumstances, but from faith that the darkness will ultimately disperse.”

Rabbi Asman added that Lag BaOmer is associated with Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, one of the great sages and authors of the Zohar, making it a day of unique spiritual strength. “Therefore, I offered special prayers before the Heavenly Throne for Ukraine, for its defenders, and for peace,” he said.
