Renowned Shochet Rabbi Eliyahu Ezagui, recently consulted with Israeli chicken coop owners to address unique concerns more relevant to Israel.
The key issues were discussed were Shabbos and Vaccinations:
1. Whether Jewish owners can administer vaccinations and work on Shabbos, including the chickens’ diet.
2. Chicken growth systems: Methods used to grow chickens in confined spaces; accelerated feeding processes for faster reproduction. Which results: in larger bodies; smaller feet and wings (בוקא דאטמא צומת הגידים); potential Halachic implications.
3. Pre-Pesach precautions: Ensuring chickens do not consume chametz at least a few months before Pesach, in preparation for Shechita.
Rabbi Ezagui’s expertise shed light on the intricate relationships between Shechita, animal welfare, and Halacha in Israel’s chicken farming industry.
