Guests in Kazakhstan Join Levayah of Local Jewish Community Member
As hundreds of guests arrived in Almaty ahead of Chof Av, they paused their Shabbos preparations to join the Levayah of an elder member of the local Jewish community. In the days leading up to Chof Av, hundreds of guests began arriving at the central Chabad House in Almaty, Kazakhstan, for a special Shabbos near the Ohel of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, the Rebbe’s father.
The guests were warmly welcomed by Rabbi Yeshaya Cohen, Chief Rabbi of Kazakhstan, and the Shluchim serving throughout Almaty and the country, who prepared an extensive program of Tefillos, Shiurim, Farbrengens, and meals for the hundreds arriving for the Yahrtzeit.
On Friday morning, several Shacharis Minyanim were held, with many members of the local Jewish community joining the visiting guests. Following breakfast, a special seminar was held for Jews who had traveled from communities across Kazakhstan, featuring Shiurim delivered by the local Shluchim and guest speaker Rabbi Nachum Yitzchak Gurelik, Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Kazan, Russia.
Before Shabbos, the guests joined the Levayah of one of the elder members of the local Jewish community, who passed away on Thursday. Among those attending was philanthropist R’ Avi Shaulzon, who annually supports the hospitality efforts for guests coming to honor Reb Levi Yitzchak.
In a moving continuation of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak’s own Mesirus Nefesh for the Jewish community of Kazakhstan—as described by Rebbetzin Chana—the Shluchim of the Cohen family carried out the taharah and burial, even as their hands were full with the final preparations to host approximately 250 guests for Shabbos.
