Government Shake-Up: Charedi Parties Withdraw in Protest Over Draft Bill

Tensions surrounding the proposed Draft Law have led two major Haredi parties—Shas and Degel HaTorah—to announce their withdrawal from the government, citing a breach of prior agreements and what they describe as a campaign against Torah scholars • Full Story

On Monday, Degel HaTorah – UTJ, declared its immediate resignation from all government and coalition positions. The decision came following instructions from Rabbi Dov Lando, who condemned the proposed draft bill for failing to protect the legal status of yeshiva students. He accused the government of humiliating and restricting Torah scholars, calling for a full departure from the coalition.

Two days later, on Wednesday, Shas followed suit. In a statement released after a meeting of its Council of Torah Sages, the party announced it would immediately leave the government but remain in the coalition, clarifying it would not cooperate with left-wing or opposition parties. The council said that “in the current situation, it is impossible to remain in the government while Torah students are being trampled,” but emphasized that the party seeks to avoid toppling the government.

Shas MKs will continue their work in Knesset committees. According to party sources, the move is meant to signal the party’s strong opposition to the current Draft Law without actually duing anything distructive.

The statement also sharply criticized Likud MK Yuli Edelstein for backtracking on previous agreements and introducing what were described as “draconian demands.” The army and the Attorney General were also blamed for advancing an “enforcement plan” targeting yeshiva students.

The council praised Shas chairman Aryeh Deri and MKs Yinon Azulai and Ariel Attias for their efforts and urged them to ensure the law is passed before the winter Knesset session.

These coordinated withdrawals mark a significant show of protest from the Haredi leadership and place increased pressure on the coalition.
