The victim reported that the assault occurred around 7:30 a.m.
The attacker, reportedly of North African descent, struck him several times. Rabbi Cohen could not identify the assailant but said that the attacker called him a “dirty Jew” and attempted to search his pockets for money, an address, or synagogue keys.
“I couldn’t see him; he attacked me from behind,” the victim recounted, still in shock.
Rabbi Cohen is a well-known member of the Jewish and Chabad community, recognized by the Rebbe’s shluchim and long-standing members of the local Jewish community.
This incident is the latest in a series of anti-Semitic acts reported in France over recent months, despite authorities claiming they have increased monitoring around synagogues and Jewish institutions.
For Rabbi Cohen, the attack is both a personal trauma and a worrying signal for the community as a whole.
Jewish leaders in France are calling for a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrator and to strengthen security around Jewish centers.
