Hundreds of diplomats, ambassadors, members of parliament and politicians came together for the traditional Pre Rosh Hashana Cocktail party in Brussels, capital of the European Union, sponsored by the European Jewish Community (EJC), led by Chabad Shliach Rabbi Avi Tawil, and the European Jewish Association (EJA) led by Chabad Shliach Rabbi Menachem Margolin.
For the first time, the event was graced by the participation of EU President Jose Manuel Barroso and hosted by the Italian government, which holds the chair of the EU government.
Mr. Barroso spoke about rising antisemitism in Europe, and the plans of the EU to curb such instances, and fight to eradicate antisemitism from the European continent.
The event began with a tour of a special gallery presented by the Jewish Museum of Venice, sponsored by the government of Venice and the government of the Ukraine. Leading the tour was the Shlucha Mrs. Nechama Tawil who spoke about Rosh Hashana being the day of the creation of the world, and the day on which G-d decides the fate of the world.
Rabbi Avi Tawil spoke about the importance of government programs to alleviate poverty, and called upon members of the EU to take upon themselves to expand the involvement of government in creating a better life for residents of Europe.
Rabbi Menachem Margolin thanked Mr. Barroso, and reiterated that the responsibility of protecting the rights of minorities, especially Jews, lies upon the shoulders of the governments, and it is in their power to ensure Europe remains a safe haven for Jews.
Chabad Shliach Rabbi Michoel Rosenblum concluded the event with the sound of the Shofar.
