A moment of honor and friendship in the Jewish community of Cyprus: the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus, His Excellency John Breslow, attended the Jewish community’s Rosh Hashanah event in Larnaca together with his wife, Sonia, joining hundreds of community members.

The ambassador and his family were warmly welcomed by Rabbi Aryeh Zeev Raskin, Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Cyprus, and his wife, Rebbetzin Sheindel Raskin.

The ambassador’s visit came just days after he presented his credentials to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, officially beginning his tenure as the United States Ambassador to Cyprus.

During the event, Rabbi Raskin spoke about the special significance of Rosh Hashanah and the importance of friendship, mutual respect, and understanding between the Jewish community, Cyprus, and the United States.

    Some 3,000 Jews Across Cyprus

The Larnaca event was part of a broader network of Jewish activity held across the island during Rosh Hashanah. Alongside the central event in Larnaca, approximately 3,000 Jews participated in Tefillos and activities preparing for the new year at the seven Chabad centers throughout Cyprus.

A central focus of the activities was the Mitzvah of Tekias Shofar, while special educational programs for children were held alongside the Tefillos, connecting the younger generation with the atmosphere of Rosh Hashanah and Mitzvos.

The activities began already during the month of Elul, with special programs for teenagers and children, Shiurim, and preparation programs for the Yomim Noraim. At the same time, Mivtzoim to check Tefillin and Mezuzos were conducted throughout Cyprus, giving Jews the opportunity to have their Tashmishei Kedushah checked for Kashrus ahead of the new year.

For the Jewish community in Cyprus, which serves as a warm home for local Jews and visitors from around the world, the extensive activity reflects the ongoing work of Chabad Shluchim throughout the island.

Rabbi Aryeh Zeev Raskin, Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Cyprus, works together with Chabad Shluchim and community teams across the island to strengthen Jewish life, provide spiritual and communal support, and build bridges of friendship and understanding with Cypriot society and government and diplomatic officials.

The Rosh Hashanah events concluded with Tefillah for a good and sweet year, a year of peace, security, Brachos, and good news for Cyprus, the United States, Israel, and Jews around the world.
