Delta Airlines Rolls Out AI-Driven Ticket Pricing
Delta Air Lines is entering a new era of airfare pricing—one powered by artificial intelligence. During its recent Q2 earnings call, Delta President Glen Hauenstein revealed that the airline is now using AI to set personalized ticket prices, a move that could reshape how travelers book their flights • Read More
Currently, about 3% of Delta’s fares are being set by AI, with plans to scale up to 20% by the end of the year. Hauenstein called it a “complete reengineering of how we price tickets,” with the goal of offering “the right price at the right time to the right customer.”
The pricing model was developed in partnership with Israeli AI startup Fetcherr, which also works with other global carriers including WestJet, Virgin Atlantic, and Azul.
A Cautious Rollout
Delta is taking a deliberate approach to implementing the system. What began as a small pilot with just 1% of fares has slowly expanded, as the airline tests the AI model in what it describes as a “very controlled environment.”
“We’re going to take our time and make sure the rollout is successful,” said Hauenstein, emphasizing that the model is still learning and adapting. “You have to train these models.”
Controversy and Pushback
The move has sparked concern among privacy advocates and some lawmakers, who argue that using AI to set individual prices based on perceived willingness to pay crosses a line.
The Future of Flying?
Delta sees AI as a long-term investment and a key part of its digital transformation strategy. While the technology promises more efficient pricing, it also raises ethical questions about transparency, fairness, and data use.
As the airline expands the program in the coming months, travelers may increasingly find themselves paying a price that’s tailored—perhaps a little too precisely—for them.
