The Rabbonim of Crown Heights and members of the Crown Heights Beis Din, Rabbi Yosef Yeshaya Braun and Rabbi Avraham Osdoba, issued a letter on Erev Shabbos to the neighborhood’s sofrim and magihim, amid concerns over individuals lacking proper yiras Shamayim seeking to enter the field of STA”M work.
In the letter, the Rabbonim write that, in accordance with a longstanding community enactment dating back to the year 5747, all sofrim and magihim working in Crown Heights are required to possess a letter of kabbalah and be registered with the Beis Din.
“Only one who is registered with the Beis Din is permitted to write or proofread in Crown Heights,” the Rabbonim state.
The letter notes that while there may be individuals who display outward signs of religious observance and can present themselves as qualified, serious concerns have arisen regarding the standards and integrity of some entering the profession. The Rabbonim therefore stress the importance of maintaining proper oversight and ensuring that only approved individuals engage in this sacred work.
The Beis Din further called upon members of the community to verify that any sofer or magiah they employ is officially registered with the Crown Heights Beis Din, in accordance with the community regulations established by previous Rabbonim.
The letter concludes with a reminder that registration can be arranged through the Beis Din office, and that community members are encouraged to confirm the status of a sofer or magiah before commissioning work.
