Chief Rabbi of Kyiv Meets with Chief Rabbi of Israel Amid Sensitive Geopolitical Moment
A special meeting took place in Jerusalem between Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch, Chief Rabbi of Kyiv and Chief Rabbi of Ukraine’s Prison Service, and Israel’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Kalman Ber • Full Story
The meeting came at a particularly sensitive time, as international efforts advance toward a possible framework for renewed negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, under direct pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. Against this backdrop, both rabbis emphasized the unifying role of the Jewish community in Ukraine and the importance of safeguarding Jewish identity and tradition despite the ongoing challenges.
During the discussion, Rabbi Markovitch presented a comprehensive overview of how Ukraine’s Jewish community has coped through more than three and a half years of war: maintaining regular Jewish life, providing humanitarian assistance to Jews in need, and addressing unique halachic challenges. He also shared insights from his role as Rabbi of the Prison Service, including issues of Jewish observance behind bars, as well as his experiences supporting Jewish soldiers in the Ukrainian army.
Halachic questions arising from Ukraine’s wartime reality were raised during the meeting, and the rabbis agreed to establish an ongoing consultation channel with Israel’s Chief Rabbinate.
Chief Rabbi Kalman Ber welcomed the meeting, stressing the commitment of Israel’s Chief Rabbinate “to stand alongside the Jewish community in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine, to strengthen Torah and education, and to ensure that even in a time of political and security uncertainty, Jewish life continues in full.”
