Along with the body of Ya’ir (Yaya) Yaakov HY”D, which was returned to Israel last week from Hamas captivity, the body of kidnapped fallen reservist Master Sgt. (res.) Aviv Atzili HY”D was also brought back. At the time, we reported that a body had been returned, though the name was not yet cleared for publication — that full article is available here.
Atzili, a member of the emergency response team of Kibbutz Nir Oz, went out to fight the terrorists on the morning of the Simchas Torah massacre, fell in battle, and was abducted from the kibbutz by Islamic Jihad terrorists. He was 49 years old at the time of his death.
His wife Liat was kidnapped from their home in Nir Oz by Hamas terrorists and was returned from captivity as part of a hostage deal.
The devastating news of her husband’s murder was delivered to Liat a day after she was freed from captivity.
The couple had three children, aged 18, 20, and 22. The youngest, Aya, was staying that Shabbos at Kibbutz Samar in the Arava as part of her gap year program. The older two, Ofri and Neta, were in Nir Oz during the massacre and survived.
“Aviv was a pillar of the Nir Oz community. He ran the kibbutz’s agricultural equipment garage. A painter, cyclist, and lover of people and the land. May his memory be a blessing,” the kibbutz said in a statement.
