In an anti-Semitic move, Rabbi Chezky and Chani Lifshitz, the Rebbe’s Shluchim in Kathmandu, Nepal, were evicted from their home after months of harassment and restrictions.
On Facebook, the Shlucha Chani shared:
“The last days are not easy for my husband and me. Do you know what? Tough days. Yes, we are in a crisis. But we don’t abandon the Shlichus. We’re out here. And we are staying here in Kathmandu.
“But, after many years, this particular house was the engine of our lives. A place [we hosted many for] Shabbos, Chagim, [where] tears, [and] hugs flowed, with conversations that lasted until the night was over. We find ourselves packing everything into boxes, looking for a new place. And how much we invested in this house… Yours and ours. Wow. And to suddenly start it all over again. What a lesson in humility this is…
“Why is this happening? In recent months, we have felt the loop tighten all around us.
Another request from the landlord, another demand, another restriction and another decree…
These were months of nightmares. At first, we were asked to remove all the signs in Hebrew–so that they don’t show that there’s a Jewish presence here… let them not suspect him from Iran that he is a spy…
“At the same time, the economic demands went up and were raised again and again. To the point where it was no longer possible to stand them at all. Slowly, slowly, it became clear to us that we were leading to one place: What is this place? They don’t want it to be a home for the Jews. What our presence is here? Superfluous. In the way. And it hurts. Because behind all this was a clear sense of anti-Semitism, one that it was impossible to ignore anymore. And then came the moment when we were told in the translation: ‘To leave. Now.’
“And just like that, with almost no air to breathe, we pack everything into a big warehouse that we found at lightning speed in a neighborhood called Bellajo. And we are constantly checking options for a new place. We are now standing against empty walls, and I quietly say to myself: How do you leave the house? Is he even a whole soul?! Oof. Chezki says that everything is for the best (surprising anyone?) and I only have tears in my eyes… [we] promise to keep updating. And thank you for being part of our Shlichus!”
