Most Friday over the past several years, R’ Dov Moshe Newmark goes on mivtzoim in downtown Naples Florida, reaching out to shopkeepers and visitors to put on Tefillin, distribute Shabbos candles, offer a mezuzah, and share a dvar Torah.

While distributing Chanukah menorahs he was flagged down by a man who waved and said:   “I’m so glad to see you, I’m Richard Steinberg, I am Jewish too!”

When asked if he would like a menorah he replied “yes …I don’t have one.”

After a short chat about achdus, Dov Moshe asked the man if he would like to put on Tefillin to which he replied “are you sure I can? I was not raised religious… I mean, would it be disrespectful to G-D?”

Mr. Steinberg is 80 years young and had never donned Tefillin.

Dov Moshe assured him it would not only very pleasing to Hashem, but this very mitzvah could be the very purpose of their encounter.  Mr. Steinberg proudly put on Tefillin on a main street of Naples at an outdoor coffee shop and, with a little assistance, made the brachos and smoothly recited the Shema like proud Jew. It was his Bar Mitzvah and throughout the whole process he was smiling.

A bystander, who was visiting town from Italy, quickly approached and said: “Wow!  I’m not Jewish but you guys are so holy I feel great just watching.
