Twenty-two Ukrainian civilians, including five children, were killed in a Russian missile attack on Pryluky, in Ukraine’s Chernihiv region. According to local authorities, hundreds of homes across dozens of buildings were damaged, and additional people may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

Rabbi Yisrael Silberstein, the Rebbe’s Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Chernihiv, informed the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJCU) that several Jewish families’ apartments had sustained extensive damage in the attack.

The apartments are located in two neighboring buildings that were struck by the powerful blast. Despite the significant damage, all the Jewish residents escaped injury. One family was not home at the time of the strike, while a Jewish resident of another apartment was inside his home when it was hit but was miraculously unharmed.

Tragically, many other Ukrainian civilians were not as fortunate, as the attack became one of the deadliest strikes on a civilian population center in recent weeks.

Pryluky is a city of approximately 55,000 residents, including some 250 Jews today. The city once had a much larger Jewish community. Historical records indicate that around 1900, approximately 8,000 Jews lived there, making up about 30 percent of the population. Many Jews returned to the city after World War II, and an improvised Shul continued operating there clandestinely until 1977.

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine told ChabadInfo:

“Ukrainian civilians pay the price of this terrible war and Russian terror every day. Just two weeks ago, the teenager Daniel Umansky, who held Israeli citizenship, was killed when his home in Kyiv was struck. Synagogues and Jewish cemeteries have also sustained direct hits.

“We are preparing for an especially difficult winter and continue to pray for peace and for Moshiach to come soon.”
