For the last 25 years, Chabad rabbis have sought to recover a collection of sacred texts which are central to their religious life. Seized and confiscated by the Soviet Government at the time of the Bolshevik Revolution, the library and archive are still held by the Russian government.

For the last year, Senator Hatch has led his Senate colleagues in an effort to recover the texts, which comprise the “sacred heritage of an entire community.” Most recently, he drafted a letter signed by all 100 members of the Senate urging the Russian government to return the texts to Chabad, their rightful owners. He plans to enlist the help of the State Department and the Trump administration in the effort.

“I have tremendous respect for scripture and the critical role it plays in the spiritual lives of millions across the globe,” Hatch said. “That’s why I was deeply honored to help these Chabad rabbis recover this set of sacred texts. Much like Utah’s early settlers, our Jewish brothers and sisters are a record-keeping people who cherish the word of G-d and look to holy scripture as a source of identity and inspiration. As a person of faith myself, I was moved by their earnest desire to reclaim these religious records for the benefit of future generations. I also felt compelled to help these rabbis as a statement against discrimination and religious intolerance. Amid a wave of rising anti-Semitism, showing solidarity with our Jewish friends is more important now than ever before.”

Senator Hatch, who is a longtime supporter of Israel, has worn a Mezuzah around his neck for many years as a symbol of his deep respect for the Jewish people.

Yesterday, the rabbis dedicated and blessed a Mezuzah for the door of Senator Hatch’s President Pro Tem office.

Senator Hatch was honored to stand with this inspiring group of religious leaders.
