“HaMaor” is a highly regarded Torah journal whose editor was Rabbi Meir Amsel. Often, they would publish sichos and letters of the Rebbe, and sometimes, the Rebbe especially edited sichos just for publication in the HaMaor.
In the Nissan-Iyar issue of 5741 (1981), an unusual Michtav Klali of the Rebbe was published on the front page of the journal. The topic of the letter was the painful declining spiritual and material situation of Yiddishkeit throughout the world, and a practical plan of action to solve this — a heartfelt call from the Rebbe that all Jews unite around Toras Emes, by making gatherings with Torah, Tefillah, and Tzedakah.
The editor added to the Rebbe’s letter the following title: “Michtav Nora el Klaliyus Yisrael — An Alarming Letter to World Jewry.” When this was submitted into the Rebbe for hagaha (editing), the Rebbe commented:
למה להוסיף בהפחדות
“Why add in intimidations?”
When it was resubmitted a second time, and no correction was made, the Rebbe himself changed it to מכתב מיוחד — a special letter…” and added גשמי, making the subtitle read “…the deteriorating spiritual and physical decline in the world R”l.”
Once returned, the Rebbe told his secretary, R’ Leibel Groner to further change it to דחוף — urgent, (which he added on) and so it was published as “An urgent letter” (see facsimile below).
