Southern Crown Heights experienced a series of at least three manhole explosions on Sunday morning, resulting in a large fire beneath a parked car.
The explosions are believed to be the result of flame-ignited gas that was trapped within the tiny, electrical equipment-packed underground chambers.
When build-up of the flammable gas became too great, the pressure dislodged the manhole covers, and sent them sailing through the air, causing the explosions seen this morning.
Empire Shtibel during Shachris was evacuated, and the FDNY closed the intersection of Brooklyn and Empire.
Homes and businesses on the block and on nearby Montgomery Street were evacuated, and there is a heavy emergency personnel presence.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
