Friday, August 29, 2014 at 4:00AM: A young man was buying some items from the convenience store on the corner of Albany and East New York Avenues when a young black male approached him and demanded his cell phone. The young man refused to give him his phone and that’s when the thug punched him in the face, grabbed the phone and fled the store. The victim acted quickly and called the Shmira emergency hotline using a friends’ phone.
Patrolling Shmira units arrived within 30 seconds and began searching for the perpetrator. After several minutes of searching with no luck they returned to the store. Police were called and together with Shmira they reviewed surveillance video. Police recognized the perpetrator and went to his apartment to find him but he wasn’t home. Shmira left their phone number with the store owner in case any updates come in.
Approximately one hour later, the perpetrator returned to the store to try and sell the stolen cell phone. The store clerk tried distracting the perpetrator while phoning Shmira. Seeing this, the perpetrator got scared, dropped the cell phone and ran off.
Shmira units continued the search until past daybreak when they spotted the perpetrator again at 6:45am on Schenectady Avenue and Midwood Street. After a short foot pursuit by Shmira members and police he was cut off by a police car, arrested and charged with assault, robbery, and resisting arrest.
