On December 1, 2022, the MTA released a draft redesign of the Brooklyn bus network. Overhauling a number of bus lines across Brooklyn, including rerouting the southbound B43 along Albany instead of Brooklyn Ave. adding the B10 along Empire Blvd. The northbound B49 will run along New York Ave and the northbound B44 will run along Rogers Ave.

As part of the redesign, southbound B43 service would be rerouted along Albany Avenue in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy, and Marcus Garvey Boulevard (north of Bed-Stuy), to serve areas without existing bus service. Closely spaced stops would also be eliminated.

“The proposed B43 would maintain its existing northbound routing.” The MTA’s draft plan stated about rerouting the B43 along Albany Ave. “Southbound between Flushing Av and Empire Blvd, the proposed B43 would travel on Marcus Garvey Blvd and Albany Av instead of Tompkins Av and Brooklyn Av…Southbound service on Albany Av also would better fill a network gap in Crown Heights between Nostrand Av and Utica Av. Existing southbound B43 service on Tompkins Av and Brooklyn Av would be discontinued.”

The new proposed B10 LTD will provide a new route connecting Broadway Junction and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, adding buses along Empire Blvd and E. New York Ave.

In its northern section, the proposed B49 would travel northbound on New York Av and southbound on Nostrand Av between Foster Av and Atlantic Av/Fulton St. The northbound service on New York Av would replace the B44 Local, which is proposed to be rerouted onto Rogers Av. Southbound service on Nostrand Av would be faster and more reliable due to the existing bus lanes.

Other Crown Heights routes are unaffected, including the B12, B17, B45 and the B46.

In general, the plan proposes 69 local routes and 19 express routes, for a total of 88 routes, an increase from the 62 local and 9 express routes currently in operation. It would also remove hundreds of bus stops in order to better accommodate current travel patterns, according to the agency.

“New Yorkers deserve buses that are faster and more reliable to connect them to jobs, education, health care and everything New York has to offer,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “Redesigning and improving the route system is a huge part of that strategy and we look forward to working closely with Brooklynites to adjust the plan to reflect their feedback.”
