After putting all speed and red-light cameras in New York City in use 24 hours a day, starting August 1st was not enough, the city added two new speed cameras in Crown Heights.

On Carroll Street between New York and Nostrand Avenues a new speed camera was installed a few weeks ago. Meanwhile on Maple Street between Albany and Troy a new camera was installed recently.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017, speeding killed 9,717 people, accounting for more than a quarter (26%) of all traffic fatalities that year. In New York State, about 30 percent of all traffic fatalities list speeding as a contributing factor. Proactive and targeted speed enforcement is a method to reverse this trend and reduce deaths and injuries due to crashes.

Since January 2021, there has been four pedestrian fatalities in Crown Heights, according to the NYCs ‘Vision Zero’ dashboard. And across the city there were 125 pedestrians fatally hit, and 17,204 pedestrians were injured in 2021.

A state law signed in June by New York Governor Kathy Hochul now allows speed cameras to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Speed cameras and automated traffic enforcement are shown to reduce speeding by 72 percent.

The city’s 2,000 automated speed cameras were previously authorized by the state to operate only on weekdays, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., missing the 59 percent of traffic fatalities that occurred when the cameras were required to be turned off.
