• Illuminate by Maor: Ensuring Financial Stability

Few college graduates work in a field related to their major. Most are working in jobs that don’t even require a degree. If a secular education is not the key to financial success and stability, what is?

Is education a priority for you? Statistically, less than fifty percent of college graduates work in a field related to their major. Most are working in jobs that don’t even require a degree. If a secular education is not the key to financial success and stability, what is?

Parshas Behar narrates the mitzvah of Shemittah. The presentation of the topic seems to be counterintuitive. The Torah first describes the Sabbatical, and only then are we told about the six prior years of farming that allowed the farmer to save up enough food to survive while he is not working.

The Torah flips the order of the passages to help us flip our mindset:

We may mistakenly assume that the farmer’s income is dependent on the preceding six years of toil. Yet, Shemittah is mentioned first to show that the opposite is true. His faith in Hashem which takes him off the farm is what ensures his success while he is at work.

Shemittah reminds us that if we truly care for our child’s financial security, the formative years of his life should be centered around cultivating a meaningful connection to the Divine Provider, through a solid Jewish education. Then we are assured success from the true Provider.

The first step in a child’s education is total immersion in Torah and mitzvos. This foundation gives him the awareness that Hashem is the source of our income.

A Jew doesn’t make a living. Both a person’s life and livelihood are a Divine gift. While farming, like any profession, is a useful tool, it is not the source of income.

Learning a trade will come with time. First, let’s prioritize the channel for true success and financial security.
