Rabbi Berel Lazar, Chief Rabbi of Russia, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree by Bar-Ilan University during a gala marking the university’s 70th anniversary, held Monday evening in Ramat Gan.
The ceremony honored five prominent figures for their contributions to society, culture, education, philanthropy and humanitarian work. Alongside Rabbi Lazar, honorary degrees were presented to U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and others.
In his remarks, Rabbi Lazar reflected on the beginning of his work in the former Soviet Union nearly 40 years ago, when many believed that Jewish communal and religious life could never be restored.
He recalled the Rebbe’s unwavering belief in the Neshama and the possibility of rebuilding Jewish life, even when the situation appeared hopeless.
Rabbi Lazar also spoke about the special connection between Bar-Ilan University’s combination of academic knowledge and Jewish tradition and the work of rebuilding Jewish communities in Russia.
The event also featured a moving appearance by Sasha Trufanov, who was released from Hamas captivity, and his mother, Elena. They spoke about the support Rabbi Lazar and his wife, Chana, provided to their family throughout the difficult period of his captivity.
Trufanov recalled that after his release, he put on Tefillin for the first time together with Rabbi Lazar.
The honorary degree recognizes Rabbi Lazar’s decades of leadership and his extensive work strengthening Jewish life, education and community across Russia.
