Colombia officially inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday, October 14, in a significant reversal of the policies of former President Gustavo Petro, who severed diplomatic relations with Israel in May 2024. The ceremony was attended by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula Escobar, and Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion. The opening follows the restoration of diplomatic ties in August under Colombia’s new President, Abelardo de la Espriella, who had pledged to move the embassy to Jerusalem.
The move marks a renewed chapter in relations between the two countries, which are also restoring their free trade agreement and seeking to expand cooperation in security, agriculture, technology, and trade. Sa’ar welcomed the opening as a significant milestone for Israel and Jerusalem, while Colombia’s Foreign Ministry described it as a diplomatic milestone reflecting a renewed commitment to bilateral cooperation. The embassy will operate under the leadership of Ambassador Tania Gilinski.
