A growing trend has emerged in Ukraine in recent weeks, as increasing numbers of Jewish soldiers serving on the front lines are requesting to undergo Bris Milah, seeking to strengthen their connection to tHashem and believing that the merit of the mitzvah will protect them.
“The scenes I witnessed made me realize that if I am destined to die, I want to die as a Jew—after engraving my bond with G-d into my flesh through Bris Milah,” said Grigory P., a soldier whose duty is to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers from the battlefield.
Following his decision, six additional Jewish soldiers requested to undergo Bris Milah after hearing his story, prompting a joint initiative between Mohel Rabbi Yoel Gelber and the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJCU).
Through Yaakov Sinyakov, who oversees the federation’s outreach to Jewish soldiers serving at the front, visits to military bases are planned in the coming weeks. During these visits, Grigory’s story will be shared, the significance of Bris Milah will be emphasized, and arrangements will be made for group circumcision ceremonies for soldiers who receive leave from their units.
The Federation said, “The merit of Bris Milah is a source of protection and salvation. We pray that all the soldiers return home safely and in good health.”
