A remarkable miracle unfolded Monday morning in Ocean Township, New Jersey, when a large section of the roof at a BJ’s Wholesale Club suddenly collapsed during torrential rain and historic flash flooding. Despite the terrifying scene, all 27 people inside the store escaped without injury, in what first responders described as an extraordinary outcome.
The collapse occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m., as powerful thunderstorms dumped inches of rain across central New Jersey, overwhelming drainage systems and turning roads into rivers.
Surveillance footage from inside the store captured the dramatic moment when a massive torrent of water burst through the ceiling, sending debris, merchandise, and displays crashing across the floor. One shopper narrowly escaped being struck by the collapsing roof, while two others were briefly trapped before managing to free themselves safely.
Emergency crews from multiple agencies rushed to the scene, including Urban Search and Rescue teams, drone units, and K-9 teams, to ensure no one remained trapped inside the damaged building. Authorities later confirmed that everyone had been accounted for and that, Baruch Hashem, there were no injuries despite the extensive structural damage.
The roof collapse came as severe storms battered much of New Jersey, New York, and parts of Pennsylvania. Flash flooding submerged dozens of roads, stranded motorists, flooded businesses, and forced multiple emergency rescues throughout the region.
Officials warned that travel remains dangerous in many areas as additional flooding is possible.
Authorities are urging residents to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways, as water levels can rise rapidly and become life-threatening.
Drivers are also asked to obey all road closures and barricades while emergency crews continue responding across the affected areas.
