Despite freezing temperatures and heavy snow, members of the Jewish community of Kostanay gathered to celebrate the joy and mitzvot of Purim at the Chabad-Lubavitch center in the city.
The Megillah was read by the shliach and Chief Rabbi of Kostanay and the region, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Zalmanov, who welcomed participants together with his family. Community members took part in the mitzvot of the day, including hearing the Megillah, giving Machatzit HaShekel, donating Matanot La’Evyonim, exchanging Mishloach Manot, and celebrating with a joyful Purim seudah.
The venue was decorated in the spirit of Shushan, with large illustrations from the Megillah story adorning the hall. Before the reading of the Megillah, participants studied special Russian booklets about the history and meaning of the holiday.
During the Purim seudah, Rabbi Zalmanov shared words of Torah and Chassidus about the joy of Purim and the unity of the Jewish people. Participants also listened to a special audio message from his grandfather, Rabbi Zalman Hacohen Abelsky, Chief Rabbi of Moldova and Chișinău and founder and leader of Chabad-Lubavitch of Moldova, who shared inspiring words about Purim and strengthening Jewish life.
Throughout the evening, participants sang Chabad niggunim, shared heartfelt L’chaim, and strengthened their connection to Torah and mitzvot. Many men also had the opportunity to put on tefillin, proudly expressing their Jewish identity.
In addition to the central celebration in Kostanay, Purim joy was brought to Jews throughout the region. Mishloach Manot packages and Matanot La’Evyonim were delivered to Jewish homes in nearby towns and villages, including Rudny, Lisakovsk, Karabalyk, Zhitikara and surrounding areas.
Even in the freezing cold of northern Kazakhstan, the warmth of Yiddishkeit and the joy of Purim shone brightly, as the community celebrated together and prayed to soon merit the coming of the complete Geulah with Moshiach Tzidkeinu.
