Amazon, the online retail giant, has removed Nazi, neo-Nazi and white supremacist items from its website after a protest by the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC). The SWC contacted Amazon demanding that the items be removed and that the company put systems in place to end the sale of hateful products. This was the sixth time in six years that the SWC had protested the availability of Nazi propaganda films, books and antisemitic literature on Amazon’s US, UK, French and German sites.

The SWC criticized Amazon for failing to remove similar items in the past after the SWC had protested. Rabbi Abraham Cooper, SWC Associate Dean and Director of Global Social Action, said, “Amazon is the nation’s go-to-online store for every imaginable product. In an era when 63 percent of all religious-based hate crimes in America target America’s Jews—2.4 percent of the US population, at a time when Blacks are again the number one target of race-based hate crimes, Amazon should not be using its business model to market hateful symbols and neo-Nazi paraphernalia.”

The SWC said that while it was prepared to work with Amazon to identify and remove antisemitic items, it criticized the retail giant for failing to remove similar items in the past after the SWC had protested. Amazon has faced criticism in the past for allowing hate symbols and white supremacist items to be sold on its platform. This latest move by Amazon to remove these items is a positive step towards curtailing the spread of hate and discrimination.
