Except for those in Kharkov who are thinking about Chanukah. The subway stations in Kharkov were home to over 15,000 people for months of the war. On May 23, Rabbi Moshe Moskovitz returned to Kharkiv with two of his children—Sholom Ber, 22, and Sheina, 16. According to Miriam Moskovitz, her family said it was “very special to be home and be back in our shul.” Igor Terechov, the mayor of Kharkiv, Ukraine, made a visit on Tuesday to the Chabad Choral Synagogue, where he met with Rabbi Moskovitz, as well as local community members who have been living in the synagogue since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February • Full Story, Photos
Wednesday night a direct missile attack hit the Nikolsky department store right next to the Kharkov synagogue. The intensity of the explosion blew out windows in the synagogue. At the time over one hundred people were sleeping in the synagogue and thank G-d no casualties • Full Story, Photos
Photos have been circulation around social media of broken glass windows in the historic Beit Menachem Synagogue in Kharkov, the Ukrainian city’s Chabad headquarters. As the Russian military amps up their indiscriminate shelling of Ukrainian cities, the action has moved closer and closer to the beloved synagogue. Earlier this week, Chabad Shluchim in Kharkov organized two groups of Jews who wanted to flee the beleaguered city.
