Op-Ed by Rabbi Gershon Avtzon: Picking up on the words “empty slogans,” I would like to discuss an often-quoted slogan that is repeated often in Chabad but is used by many in the opposite of its true intent: “Chabad demands P’nimius.” While the obvious intent is that a Chassid should also focus on his internal Avodas Hashem – and that his internal self should match what he looks like externally – to too many people the interpretation is: In Chabad, we don’t care about externals and we only focus on the internals. • Full Article
As we begin preparing for Rosh Hashana, the time for reaccepting upon ourselves the kingship of Hashem, it is appropriate to speak about two very important and sensitive topics: Tznius and Beards • By Rabbi Gershon Avtzon • Full Article
Question: I serve as a mashpia in a Mesivta and spend hours speaking to the young bochurim and helping them navigate their personal challenges and struggles. One of the key areas that I focus on is strengthening the bond and connection between the student and his parents (unless it is an abusive relationship ch”v). In addition to speaking with the student, I also find it useful to have discussions with the parents. I was wondering if there is guidance from the Rebbe on this topic. Question: I am a principal of a Chabad-affiliated day school in a city where there are many families of Sephardic background that follow the Sephardic customs and these students make up a large portion of our student body. I was wondering if we should make a goal of having these students adopt Minhagei Chabad — vis-a-vis the nusach of davening etc. — or not? I have been blessed, Baruch Hashem, with a successful business and I am looking to do a special Mitzvah. I have two options in mind: 1) To commission the writing of a new Sefer Torah, or 2) Support an existing Torah institution. I am asking you — from a Chinuch standpoint — where would my children receive the bigger message of the importance of investing in a mitzvah and tzedakah? Question: I am bachur. I have a full-time job that includes much manual labor. When I wear my Tzitzis, I sweat and it becomes dirty and soiled. I am wondering: 1) Is it more respectful for my Tzitzis if I remove them during my work? 2) Do I have to wear them at night? If yes, should I switch to a pair of night-tzitzis?
