It started when Menachem Mendel of Kitah Daled at Cheder Lubavitch Chicago set out to convey the central themes of Tishrei in a manner that would appeal to even young kids. With vibrant full-page color drawings and cute poems lined with depth, his book, “A Journey Through Tishrei,” did just that.
The incredible feedback from avid readers inspired Menachem Mendel to continue on to the second volume of his “Yom Tov Journeys” series. His goal and motto remain to make learning fun and enjoyable for kids!
A Chanuka & Purim Journey, his latest release, goes through the themes of these Yomim Tovim in an entertaining and creative way.
With vibrant full-color illustrations and cute poems, we are told of the miraculous victory of the few against many, the Nes of finding an oil jug when the Beis Hamikdosh was a mess, and insights into the various Chanuka minhagim. The sizzling hot latkes and delicious donuts are not forgotten, don’t worry!
At some point along our journey, we bump into Mr. Dreidel, who shares some of his family history and Chanuka story tidbits. We also learn about the power of light to overpower darkness and the special quality of night number five.
After a brief rest stop, our journey continues to the Yom Tov of Purim. The four special Mitzvos of Purim get honorable mention, with interesting details about each one. We meet a jolly clown and hear about dress-up ideas. The other minhogim of Purim take center stage as well, including the scrumptious hamatashen and noisy graggers.
In fact, Mr. Hamantash fills us in with some additional details about the Purim story, including how Mordechai gathered the Yiddishe kinderlach to daven to Hashem and the great Nes that occurred, with the entire situation being turned over on its head. A central theme expressed in the book is to take the simcha along with us for the rest of the year.
Available both as softcover and hardcover on Amazon, the books in the Yom Tov Journeys Series can also be found at TheMMbooks.com.
