Normandy, France — Recently, Rabbi Shmuel Brodovitch, director of the first class at Yeshiva Ketana Tomchei Tmimim in Brunoy, France, led a group of students on an educational trip to the historic invasion beaches of Normandy. This visit, organized by Rabbi Moti Lewin, the Rebbe’s emissary in Caen, was designed to deepen the students’ understanding of the pivotal events of the 1930s and 1940s.
The trip provided a comprehensive historical overview, including insights into the Rebbe’s experiences in France during World War II, his efforts to rescue his son-in-law, and the significant events leading up to the D-Day invasion. The students explored various historical sites, including fighter planes and bunkers, and paid their respects by reciting Kaddish at a cemetery dedicated to the fallen soldiers. They also participated in a moving ceremony of writing a letter in a Torah scroll at several historic locations, including Nazi bunkers and bridges.
In addition to the historical exploration, the students sang Chabad Niggunim and experienced the Normandy landscape through jeep tours, enhancing their understanding of the historic battle’s context. The visit also included a special performance of the “French Anthem” in front of Caen’s city hall, reflecting the students’ reverence and connection to the site’s significance.
The trip concluded with a celebration at the new Chabad House in Drancy, a community center recently acquired by Rabbi Moti and Zlata Lewin. The evening featured a lively dinner and dance with Rabbi Aryeh Tzvi Nisielevich, the Rebbe’s Shliach in Drancy, who captivated the students with his engaging presence.
The new Chabad House will serve as a central hub for community activities, including a kosher store, guest accommodations, the city’s first Mikvah, and a kindergarten.
