Earlier this week, Yerushalayim’s Name and Commemoration Committee approved a list of personalities that will be commemorated throughout the city.
The list includes Reb Levi Yitzhak Schneerson, the father of the Rebbe MH”M. who served as Rov of Yekatrinoslav (now known as Dnepropetrovsk) in Ukraine and was known for his geonos and Mesiras Nefesh for preserving Yiddishkeit in the Iron Curtain.
After more than a year of torture and interrogations in Stalin’s notorious prisons, he was sentenced to exile to the interior of Russia, where he passed away on Chof Av in 5704 (1944).
Beside him, the city also commemorated Rabbi Elazar Abuhatzeira (5708–5771), known as the Baba Elazar, the grandson of Baba Sali, who was one of the great Kabbalists. He lived in Be’er Sheva, was murdered in his home and his tragic death shocked the entire Jewish world. The commemoration locations of the two will be determined later.
The entrance interchange to Ramat Shlomo will officially bear the name of former MK Menachem Porush (1956-79), one of the prominent leaders of Agudas Yisroel. Parosh, who served as Deputy Minister of Labor and Welfare and as a member of the Knesset for over 30 years, was one of the most influential figures most of the Chareidi public in Yerushalayim and worked for the development of the city and its Mosdos.
