The largest missionary campaign since the outbreak of the war is underway, Yad L’Achim announced this week in an urgent warning to the Israeli public.
According to Shimon Abergil, one of the organization’s field coordinators, this campaign is the brainchild of Tom Kantor of the “Messianic Jews” sect, who lives in the United States and periodically launches large-scale Christian preaching campaigns in Israel.
Just last year, he publicized Christian messages on billboards in central Israel, but Yad L’Achim succeeded in warning the public in time.
Details obtained by the counter-missionary organization indicate that the current campaign will continue into the coming month. “Kantor is planning to distribute hundreds of thousands of Russian-language booklets that tell the ‘Story of Tom Kantor,’ in an attempt to reach immigrants in their native language,” Abergil said. “We are determined to halt the distribution before it picks up steam.”
The distribution has begun in Bat Yam and Jaffa, and is scheduled to expand to Rishon LeZion, Lod, Ramle, Rechovot, Tel Aviv and other cities with large immigrant populations in the central and Sharon regions.
In response to calls for help from local residents, Yad L’Achim field workers are being deployed to hot spots and working to reduce the scope of the distributions. Yad L’Achim warns the public to beware, and urges them to contact its emergency hotline, at *9234, should they encounter missionary activity.
