Southwest Airlines continued to struggle with the consequences of a winter storm that overwhelmed its operations days ago, leading to the cancellation of another 2,350 flights on Thursday.
The airline has acknowledged having inadequate and outdated operational technology which is unable to handle adverse weather conditions effectively. As a result, Southwest was the only airline unable to recover from delays caused by snow, ice and high winds over the weekend.
FlightAware tracking service reported that out of 2,451 cancellations before noon on Thursday in US airspace; an overwhelming majority (2 357) were routes operated by Southwest – representing around 58% of their entire schedule for this period.
The federal government is investigating the situation at Southwest, with total cancellations exceeding 10,000 earlier in the week. Southwest added a page to their website for stranded travelers, but many customers have been unable to reach the airline.
