Which State is the Top Destination for American Movers in 2024?
A new study has revealed that Arkansas emerged as the most popular state for relocation in 2024, with many Americans citing job opportunities, proximity to family and friends, and affordable living as key factors behind their decision to move • Read More
According to the 2024 study, this year saw the highest number of “balanced” states in the past five years, meaning there was a nearly equal number of people moving in and out of these states. Interestingly, the study also recorded the fewest outbound states in over five years, suggesting that fewer people are relocating overall.
The study attributes this trend to the so-called “lock-in effect,” where low-interest mortgage rates have kept many homeowners in place, driving up housing prices and reducing mobility.
Rhode Island ranked second for inbound moves, followed by North Carolina, Washington, D.C. (which is not technically a state), Idaho, Tennessee, Maine, Connecticut, Washington, and Alaska. While the study does not rank states based on the absolute number of moves, it measures states by the percentage of inbound versus outbound moves, with a state needing at least 55% of its total moves to be outbound to be considered “outbound.”
The study also noted that the rise in return-to-office (RTO) mandates from major corporations like Amazon, Walmart, and CVS is likely contributing to the influx of people into states like Arkansas, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C.
On the other hand, Louisiana was ranked as the top state people are leaving, with respondents citing a challenging job market and high living costs as major reasons for their departure. It was followed by California, Illinois, South Dakota, and New York as the states with the most outbound moves.
“Three of the country’s largest and most expensive states – California, Illinois, and New York – continue to see a high number of people leaving,” the press release noted. “Illinois and New York have remained on the outbound list for more than five years, but California’s return to the list in 2024 is notable, given its status as a balanced state in recent years.”
For its part, the 2024 survey also showed that job changes were a major driver of moves, with 32% of respondents relocating for work, 25% for family reasons, and 10% citing affordability. Other factors, such as climate, safety, health, education, and retirement, accounted for the remaining 33%.
In 2023, Maine topped the list of states people were most likely to move to, while Illinois was the leading outbound state.
