Volunteers and students from the United States studying at Matityahu Yeshiva in Israel arrived at Kibbutz Kerem Shalom in the Gaza Envelope and planted a new vineyard in memory of Amichai Witzan z”l, a member of the settlement’s emergency response team, who fell while defending the kibbutz on October 7th.

The initiative was organized and funded by Ayelet Hashachar, which has been operating various projects since the beginning of the fighting to strengthen communities.

The vineyard was planted in an area designated for a future community winery, an idea that Amichai himself had promoted over the years.

Kibbutz residents expressed their appreciation for the initiative, which provides encouragement during their rehabilitation process .

The activity was led by Rabbi Shlomo Raanan, Chairman of Ayelet Hashachar, together with the yeshiva administration, as part of a solidarity tour for the students.

After the planting, the students toured the kibbutz, passing by the damaged houses, and visited with Amichai Shindler — who was critically wounded in the battle for Kerem Shalom — at his home.

They heard about his inspiring recovery journey, accompanied by musician Itzy Ackerman, who works with the yeshiva and organization.

The students sang soul-stirring songs together and prayed in memory of the fallen.

During the visit, Rabbi Shlomo Raanan said: “Amichai sacrificed his life to protect this place. When students and volunteers come here to plant a vineyard, they are continuing his vision and strengthening the connection to the Gaza Envelope and to families rebuilding their homes.”

This project joins a long list of activities led by Ayelet Hashachar: establishing a prayer tent at the Hostages Square, building synagogues throughout the country, supporting families in the Gaza Envelope, and creating connections between diverse communities for more than three decades.
