Vandal Arrested After Targeting Chabad Center in Afula
A shocking act of vandalism that targeted the new Chabad Etchalta Center in Afula’s industrial zone, as reported here has been swiftly resolved. Less than 48 hours after unknown perpetrators defaced and destroyed signage announcing the new center, an intensive investigation led to the identification and arrest of the suspect • Read More
Rabbi Amir Halevi, the Rebbe’s Shliach and director of the center, refused to let the attack go unanswered. Working alongside local business owners and residents, he quickly gathered security footage from the surrounding area, piecing together the suspect’s movements. Within hours, he had compiled a comprehensive case—including images of the suspect and details about the vehicle used.
With this evidence in hand, Rabbi Halevi, who is also a lawyer, filed an official complaint with the Afula police, prompting swift action from law enforcement. Officers, led by Station Commander Dep. Chief Yaniv and the municipal policing unit, tracked down and arrested the suspect within a day.
An End to a Long-Running Spree
While the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed, preliminary investigations suggest this was not an isolated incident. Authorities believe he is responsible for a prolonged campaign of vandalism, systematically defacing hundreds of signs featuring the Rebbe’s holy image across multiple locations. His method—spray-painting over the Rebbe’s face—suggests a deliberate, targeted attack on Chabad’s presence.
Despite the attack, Rabbi Halevi remains resolute. “If they thought this would stop us, they were mistaken,” he stated. “We are moving forward with even more strength, more light, and more community outreach than before.”
In a show of solidarity, local businesses immediately stepped up, donating triple the number of signs that were destroyed. “For every sign they take down, we will put up three more,” Rabbi Halevi affirmed—and he has already made good on that promise.
Building for the Future
The Chabad Etchalta Center, which aims to provide spiritual support for business owners, employees, and passersby, is open as planned. It will offer access to tefillin, Torah classes, prayers, and mitzvah opportunities, deepening the bond between Chabad and Afula’s business community.
With two additional branches planned for this year, Rabbi Halevi and his team are actively seeking more emissaries to expand their work.
As for the suspect—he will now face the legal consequences of his actions.
