Chanukah in Springfield, Illinois was one for the books! Chabad of Springfield, directed by Rabbi and Mrs. Mendy Turen, was full of action from the start of Chanukah until it’s final moments.

On the first night of Chanukah, the Chabad House hosted a community event at the local mall. Over 80 people came out for the event, a surprisingly large number for the small community. The attendees appreciated the opportunity to display their Jewish pride by partaking in this experience.

On the final night of Chanukah, the Chabad house hosted their annual car-topped Menorah parade.

On Thursday afternoon, the final night of Chanukah, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker hosted the Shluchim at the Governor’s Mansion in Springfield for this year’s State menorah lighting.

During the the Chanukah celebrations, Governor Pritzker the spoke about rising Anti-Semitism, “I could spend all of our time together today talking about our community’s grief, our sorrow, our fear. It’s at the forefront of all of our minds. I will not focus on that other than to say this, hate is evil

“I’m proud of being Jewish and to share my heritage with the people of our state during Chanukah, an honor and a privilege that my ancestors who escaped antisemitic terror in Ukraine could never have imagined,” Pritzker said.

He added despite the hate Chanukah is about light not hate or darkness “The holiday of Chanukah is all about the light and that is the one mission that each of us have. The world can be dark, there can be lots of negativity. Our job is to add light.”

Following the governor, Rabbi Turen addressed the audience, “Happy Chanukah, what a privilege to be here with my dear friend Governor Jay Robert Pritzker. Thanks to all the organizers.

“We are now in the holiday of light, our job is to light up, even if there is a lot of darkness in the world around us and bad things our job is to light up the darkness.

“To light the Chanukah menorah is to do another Mitzvah, another good thing, another act of kindness. I want to congratulate the governor who is always spreading light and fights against the darkness, we all should learn from him.
