The personal seal of the Rebbe is up for auction
For the first time ever in sales! The personal seal of The Rebbe Maharash, Rabbi Shmuel Schneerson is up for auction today! Don’t miss this unique opportunity! • Full Story
The Memories Auction House is proud to present an extraordinary item as part of our upcoming auction that will be held today, Monday 9/23 at 1pm (New York time) ( 20:00 israel time) alongside additional Judaica items, important Tanya editions, rare editions of Chassidic books, and Kuntresim, bills and coins given directly by the Rebbe.
An exciting discovery is introduced for the first time by Memories: the Chotam of Cohen Gadol, a metal stamp with the inscription of Rabbi Shmuel Shneerson. Beneath it, a dove with an olive leaf in its beak, hovering above a star-of-David.
The form of writing שניאור סאן is familiar from his other stamps. This stamp was redeemed by a Chassid, a US citizen, who bought it from a Russian gentile whom he met on a business trip to the Russian prairies. That Chassid purchased it for his friend, the owner of the stamp, and he is the one who gave it to Memories to be auctioned.
The stylish stamp with the fine engravings befits his grandeur. See Sefer Hatoldot Lamaharash for an example (p. 38, freely translated): “In those days, railroads were scarce and the Rebbe the Maharash bought a special horse-carriage for his trips. The carriage was led by four horses and cost several hundred rubles. Silk was spread on its inside walls and there was a bed and table in it and a place for books and writings…”
Similar descriptions of the Maharash’ wealth can be found in the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s lists (booklet 140, p. 284) and in the book Torat Menachem (section III, p. 97; section 15, pp. 322-323). Please refer to Hebrew catalog text for quotes from these sources.
Elliptic metal stamp. 2.6X2.3 cm. Height of handle: 3 cm. Cast and engraved. At the top of the handle, a hole for inserting a chain or thread. Good condition!
The auction includes a variety of additional items, rare editions of the Admor Hazaken, Kuntresim and Tanya books, bills and coins given directly by the Rebbe, threads from the Rebbe’s Gartel, letter by the Rayatz, a document about the Kashruth of a sausage factory signed by the Mara DeAtra of Kharkov, Rabbi Avraham Yechezkel Arlosoroff. In addition, a silk Gartel following the Lubavitch custom, woven with a golden thread from a garment worn by the Baal Shem Tov! And for these special days of Elul, lot 132 introduces a pair of Tefillin, Kosher and Mehudarot, made by Rabbi Netanel Hasofer Tefillinsky, who made them with all the Hidurim and Chumrot and with his unique ink.
The auction will be held today Monday,9/23 at 1 pm (New York Time,20:00 Israel time).
