The Jewish Community Provides a “Spiritual Shield” to Fighters in Ukraine

Today marks 1,000 days of the brutal war in Ukraine, sparked by Russia’s invasion. To mark this milestone, 100,000 pocket-sized Tehillims have been printed for distribution across the country, with the special addition of being the first Tehillim ever printed in Ukrainian. • Read More

Rabbi Levi Engelsman, part of the publishing team based in Dnipro, Ukraine’s Jewish hub, explains that the initiative by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJCU) aims to provide spiritual protection to as many Jews as possible. The pocket-sized Tehillim are meant to be carried everywhere, with the Psalms offering divine protection. Alongside distribution to Jewish communities, thousands more are being given to soldiers, both Jewish and non-Jewish, on the frontlines in collaboration with Chabad emissaries and Ukrainian military representatives.

Rabbi Meir Stambler, Chairman of Jewish Communities in Ukraine, emphasizes that adapting to the language of the people is key. With Ukrainian becoming the official language, the community has translated key religious texts, including Chumashim, Haggados, and Megillas Esther, into Ukrainian. “The language is part of the narrative of the war,” says Stambler, adding that spiritual support is seen as vital to Ukraine’s victory.

In partnership with Chabad’s global publishing house Kehot, the Ukrainian Tehillim has been printed to match the exact size, layout, and design of Tehillim editions in over ten languages worldwide. This ensures that Ukrainian Jews feel a deep connection when they encounter these books in synagogues around the world, reinforcing the message that Judaism is relevant and accessible in every language and situation.
