In a joint operation by the IDF and Shin Bet on Shabbos in Gaza City, senior terrorist Assad Abu Sharia — head of the Kataeb al-Mujahideen terror organization — was eliminated. He was also involved in the kidnapping of Gadi Haggai and Judy Weinstein Haggai, who were recently confirmed murdered, as well as in the abduction and murder of Thai national Netpong Pinta and another foreign hostage still believed to be held in Gaza.
As the leader of his terror group, Abu Sharia was responsible for recruiting terrorists from the West Bank and inside Israel to carry out attacks. During the current war, his organization actively engaged in fighting Israeli forces and launching terror attacks.
The Bibas family issued a statement:
“News of the elimination of this terrorist commander brings a measure of closure and is another step in coming to terms with the enormous loss of Shiri, Ariel, and Kfir. They will never return, but there is some comfort in knowing that the vile murderers will no longer harm other families. We thank the brave IDF soldiers and security forces who risk their lives for the safety of us all.”
In a separate strike, the IDF and Shin Bet also eliminated another senior member of Kataeb al-Mujahideen. He took part in the October 7th attack and was directly involved in holding the Bibas family in captivity in Gaza.
According to the IDF, operatives from the Kataeb al-Mujahideen played a major role in the October 7th massacre, participating in killings and kidnappings. Though not directly affiliated with Hamas’s leadership, they exploited Hamas’s invasion and terror infrastructure to commit atrocities in southern Israel.
