Tefillin in Riga’s Central Square: Jewish Pride on October 7 Anniversary
In the heart of Riga, Latvia, Chabad Shluchim Rabbi Shneur Kot, Shliach in Riga, and Rabbi Mendy Silberstrom, Shliach in Jurmala, helped dozens of Jews put on Tefillin during a public ceremony marking three years since the Simchas Torah massacre. The moving scene brought the timeless Mitzvah of Tefillin into the city’s central square on a day of remembrance for the victims of October 7 • Read More, Photos
The event took place at Riga’s Freedom Monument, one of Latvia’s most prominent national landmarks and a gathering place for public commemorations. A memorial rally was held there on October 7 to honor those murdered and kidnapped in the Hamas-led attack on Israel in 2023, with organizers calling on the public to remember the victims and stand together in solidarity.
Against this backdrop, the sight of Jewish men putting on Tefillin served as a powerful expression of Jewish identity and connection to Torah and Mitzvos.
As Jews around the world marked the painful anniversary, the Shluchim helped fellow Jews connect with their heritage through the daily Mitzvah of Tefillin, bringing a visible expression of Jewish life into the heart of Latvia’s capital.
