A significant and moving event took place on October 9 in Yekaterinburg, marking the grand opening of the new Square of Salvation memorial. This memorial was created in gratitude to the Ural region and its people for rescuing evacuees during the years of the Second World War II. At the heart of the square stands the striking “Soaring Stones” monument, commemorating Holocaust victims and honoring the Red Army and home front workers who contributed to the defeat of Nazism.

The ceremony, held on the grounds of the Yekaterinburg Jewish Community Center and Synagogue featured speeches from prominent figures, including the Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar, the Governor of Sverdlovsk Region Mr. Yevgeny Kuyvashev, Yekaterinburg Mayor Mr. Alexey Orlov, and Chair of the Yekaterinburg City Duma Anna Gurariy.

The project was initiated by Chief Rabbi of Yekaterinburg and Sverdlovsk Region Zelig Ashkenazi and his wife Chana Ashkenazi, who presented a model of the project as a gift to Mr. Andrey Simanovsky, owner of the “Sima-Land” group of companies. The unveiling attracted numerous members of the Jewish community, cultural leaders, and local residents from the Sverdlovsk region.

The ceremony featured performances by students from the FJC ‘Or Avner’ Jewish school in Yekaterinburg, the Central Military District Orchestra, and violinist Leonid Elkin. The event was hosted by television presenter Mr. Konstantin Zushchik.

Natalya Tereshchenko of ART HOUSE STUDIO in Yekaterinburg served as the architect of the Square of Salvation, while the “Soaring Stones” monument was designed by Mikhail Beylin from the Moscow-based architectural firm SITIZEN STUDIO. Rabbi Boruch Gorin, editor-in-chief of Knizhniki Publishing House and the Lechaim magazine, served as the project’s consultant.

This memorial site stands as a poignant reminder of the Ural region’s role in saving lives during one of history’s darkest periods and pays tribute to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
