Following appeals from Rabbonim and Torah leaders, and in accordance with the directive of the Western Wall Rabbi, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, the sign established by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel in 1967, warning against ascending to Har Habayis, has recently been reinstalled at the entrance to the site.
Upon the liberation of the Temple Mount and the Kosel in 1967, the chief rabbis at that time, along with over fifty other Rabbonim, issued a warning about the serious Isur to ascending to the Temple Mount. They stated: “Therefore, we reiterate our warning that no man or woman should dare to enter any part of the Temple Mount, regardless of which gate they enter. In addition to the seriousness of this prohibition concerning the sanctity of the holy site and the Beis Hamikdash, there is also a Mitzvah regarding reverence for the Temple and its preservation. May the Holy One, Blessed be He, grant us the merit of its swift preservation…”
It was also decided that a sign warning against the serious prohibition of entering the Temple Mount would be installed.
Over the years, the sign has been installed and removed by various parties. Rabbi of the Western Wall at the time, Rabbi Yehuda Getz, wrote in his diary about six months before his passing in Adar I 5755: “I ordered new signage warning against the prohibition of entering the Temple Mount, although I know the sign won’t last long, as various organizations supporting ascents will either remove or destroy it as they usually do.”
In recent years, the sign has again been placed and taken down. However, in light of recent events where various parties are seeking to intensify the desecration of the holy site and act against the prohibition established by the majority of Israel’s rabbis, a new sign has been prominently installed in a manner that makes it difficult to remove.
