At the Grand Choral Synagogue in Petersburg, hundreds of visitors participated in guided tours that commenced every 30 minutes. The first route led guests through the central hall and from there to the historic Small Synagogue, showcasing sacred artifacts and the rich history of the Jewish community. The second, more adventurous path involved ascending a steep spiral staircase to the synagogue’s dome, offering a panoramic view of the central hall below and access to the geniza—a repository for old scrolls and books.
In Rostov-on-Don, the Soldier Synagogue, an architectural gem completed in 1872 and restored in the early 20th century, welcomed visitors for special evening tours. Guests delved into the synagogue’s storied past, learning about its resilience through periods of turmoil and its role as a beacon of Jewish life in the region.
The recently restored historic synagogue in Bryansk, originally founded in 1891 and reopened in 2023 after a decade-long renovation, offered visitors an opportunity to appreciate its intricate wooden decorations, stained glass, and mosaics. The evening’s program included an overview of the building’s history and its significance to the local Jewish community.
These events, part of the nationwide “Night of Museums” initiative organized by the Russian Ministry of Culture, aimed to make art and history more accessible to the public. By participating, the synagogues not only showcased their architectural and cultural treasures but also fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of Jewish heritage among attendees from all walks of life and religions.
