The shaliach Rabbi Meir Stemmler from Dnipro, Chairman of the “Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine,” led a strengthening journey with his family through the cities of western Ukraine, en route to the Chabad Jewish refugee camp on the shores of Lake Balaton in Hungary, where many Shluchim and Chassidim from Ukraine have been staying in recent months.

Rabbi Stemmler, is a Chiyuv, and needed a minyan for his late mother Dvorah Sima bas Reb Eliyahu Tzvi, visited the town of Khust – which was once a bustling Jewish center. Khust is very close to Vinogradov, where Reb Baruch, the father of The Alter Rebbe, is buried. With the help of community leader Vladimir Katz, Jews from Khust and Vinogradov gathered in the town’s magnificent synagogue for Mincha-Maariv. Afterwards, Rabbi Stemmler and Mr. Katz discussed steps for community development. It is worth noting that the shaliach in the Carpathian region, Rabbi Mendel Wilhelm, is working diligently and also assisting the Khust community.

The Shul in Khust, built in 1788, is one of the few functioning synagogues in Ukraine and the only one in the Carpathian region that has preserved its original interior and wall paintings, despite the ravages of time, the Holocaust, and communism.

Rabbi Stemmler, along with his family, also visited the Jewish cemetery in Vinogradov, where R’ Baruch, the father of the Alter Rebbe, is buried.
