San Marcos: Hidden Jewish Souls Reunite Through Tefillin
Rabbi Mendy Tzikvashvili, The Rebbe’s Shaliach in San Marcos La Laguna on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala, shared a moving story from the Chabad House • Full Story
Over the past few months, during my shlichus in San Marcos La Laguna, I noticed two young men I would see daily. Curious, I asked if they were Jewish. They always smiled and replied, “No, we’re Christians—that’s how we’ve been raised our whole lives.”
But… their mothers were Jewish.
I explained to them that according to Jewish law, they are indeed Jewish! One of them was already aware of this and had even visited a few Chabad Houses in the past. However, he had never agreed to put on tefillin.
We warmly invited them to join us for a Shabbat meal at the Chabad House, but they politely declined.
Months passed, and it seemed like nothing had changed beyond their knowledge of their Jewish identity.
Then, this past Shabbat, to our great surprise, they both arrived at the Shabbat meal—accompanied by a few members of the local Israeli community who had encouraged them to experience something meaningful and reconnect with their Jewish roots.
They stayed with us for hours after the meal ended, asking questions, delving deeper into Jewish teachings, and exploring their heritage. Finally, they made a joint decision: the next day (Sunday), they would come to the Chabad House to put on tefillin for the first time in their lives and celebrate their “Bar Mitzvah” together.
Sunday morning arrived, and so did they. We studied together, learning about the profound significance of the mitzvah of tefillin, the unique bond between the Jewish people and Hashem, and the spiritual beauty of this moment.
With heartfelt joy, we celebrated their first-ever tefillin ceremony—a truly special and emotional experience. These two holy Jews, had lived their entire lives as Christians. Yet, through the guidance and care of the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, who thinks about every single Jewish soul, they reconnected with Hashem and embraced their Jewish identity in a deeply transformative way.
