Eleven years after its establishment, the Jewish community on Moskovsky prospect in Southern Petersburg, Russia, has signed a contract for the purchase of a new building that will serve as a Synagogue and Jewish Community Center. Based in a central location, the new JCC will serve more than 5,000 Jewish families living in the area.

In 2010, the new Jewish community was established in the Moskovsky area in Southern Petersburg, headed by Rabbi Shmuel Chitrik, to serve the spiritual and physical needs of over five thousand Jewish families living and working in the neighborhood. After eleven years of activity from a rented apartment, a special fundraiser managed to obtain the required funds to buy a larger permanent JCC.

The new JCC will enable additional participation in the community’s ongoing and special activities, including prayer services on Shabbat weekends and holidays, Torah classes and lectures, children’s activities, humanitarian aid services, home visits, Judaica distribution, preparation classes for Bar and Bat mitzvah, and much more.

“We are excited about this new opportunity,” says Rabbi Chitrik. “Our beautiful and vibrant community deserves the best possible accommodation, and we strive to make every single individual feel at home. The new JCC will enable us to expand both the quality of our activity and its scope. You are all welcome!”

The community wishes to extend its gratitude to the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Berel Lazar, and the city’s Chief Rabbi, Menachem Pewzner, for their support and to thank the 700 donors that made this dream turn into reality.
