With Splendor and Dignity: Thousands Participate in Pesach Seders Across Moscow

Hundreds reclined at the central Seder of Russia’s Chief Rabbi. With Public Seders held in dozens of locations throughout Russia’s capital—even the “fifth son” found his place at the many Pesach Seders in Moscow! • Full Story, Photos

After extensive and well-planned preparations, the Jewish community in Moscow, the capital of Russia, is summing up with great satisfaction the success of the Pesach Seders that were held on both nights of the holiday in dozens of neighborhoods across the city.

Thousands of Jews sat and reclined around properly set tables, at Seders conducted in accordance with Jewish law by community Rabbis and Chabad Shluchim who are active in the city throughout the entire year.

As every year, the large central public Seder took place in the grand hall of the Marina Roscha Central Shul, which was decorated with beautiful elements depicting the Exodus from Egypt. The Seder was conducted with great splendor and dignity until the late hours of the night by the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar, together with Rabbi Mordechai Weisberg, director of the Jewish community. Altogether, along with the adjoining halls, more than 1,200 people participated at this central location.

At the same time, Pesach Seders were held in all of the city’s educational institutions for hundreds of students, as well as warm and welcoming public Seders in all the Chabad Houses spread throughout the city’s neighborhoods. In addition to the availability of kosher-for-Pesach products in stores, thousands of packages of hand-baked, carefully supervised matzah were distributed to every Jew who purchased matzah, making it possible for everyone to fulfill the commandment in the most beautiful way.

The highlight this year was the “Kimcha DePischa Campaign” carried out at the Shaarei Tzedek Jewish Chesed Center complexes, which provided, in a respectful and dignified manner, essential holiday supplies—basic food items, meat, wine, and matzah—to all those in need.

In addition to the efforts within the capital, dozens of yeshiva students in Moscow traveled to distant outlying cities to organize Seders for Jews in communities without a permanent rabbi.

Through these efforts, with Hashem’s help, they succeeded in reaching every corner of Russia so that Pesach could be celebrated properly everywhere.
